What is a Birth Doula?

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a person before, during, and shortly after childbirth. My goal is to help the birthing person have a safer, more comfortable, and more empowering birth experience.

What a birth doula does

  • Emotional support: reassurance, encouragement, helping you stay calm and confident

  • Physical comfort: techniques like breathing guidance, positioning suggestions, counter-pressure, and relaxation methods

  • Advocacy support: helping you communicate your preferences to medical staff (but not speaking for you)

  • Information: explaining options, procedures, and what to expect

  • Partner support: helping the birthing partner know how to assist effectively

What a birth doula does not do

  • Provide medical care

  • Make decisions for you

  • Replace a doctor, midwife, or nurse

Benefits

Studies often show that having a doula can lead to:

  • Lower likelihood of cesarean birth

  • Reduced need for pain medication

  • Shorter labor duration

  • Higher satisfaction with the birth experience
